Pain management is the hidden epidemic of the 21 century affecting 1 out of every 10 individuals in the United Kingdom [conservative estimate]. However, until recently,Doctors did not have pain management in the curriculum in medical schools. Pain management is carried out by nurses, physiotherapists and General Practitioners in the community and by Pain management Consultants and other speciality consultants in the hospital. The Royal College of Anaesthetists along with other speciality Royal Colleges such as the Royal College of GP and British Pain society have taken a lead in developing curricula for pain management training, delivery and also developing infrastructure for delivery of pain management across the UK.
Pain Ness conference and website aims to provide education in the field of pain management in the Highland region of Scotland. The initiative is to provide pain management education as a shared learning exercise for health care professionals. This is NOT sponsored by NHS Highland. Pain Ness conference is run by the In-hospital Acute Pain team at Raigmore Hospital on a voluntary basis.
This team is involved in managing acute pain and acute on chronic pain in the hospital. Besides, Dr Dev Srivastava also runs the Raigmore Interventional Pain service at Raigmore Hospital where advanced interventions are offered for pain relief to suitable chronic pain patients.
Should you choose to sponsor any amount, this money will be spent on pain education, maintaining the pain-ness website (free educational website) and to sponsor travel and stay for the speakers at our annual conference. In the meanwhile, please use the website resources/signposts freely if needed and let us know what you think. Thank you.
Dr Dev Srivastava
